Historical Narrative

One of the undisputed pinnacles of the Italian Renaissance. It depicts the goddess Venus emerging from the sea as a fully grown woman arriving on the shore riding a giant scallop shell, blown by the gentle wind gods Zephyrs and welcomed by one of the Horae.

Visual & Curatorial Analysis

"Botticelli departs from strict naturalistic anatomy in favor of poetic linear grace, rhythmic contours, and an ethereal Neoplatonic allegory that celebrates divine love and idealized spiritual beauty."
